Cellular Toxicity (MTT assay)
The cytotoxic potential of drugs can be evaluated by MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazyl-2-yl) 2,5 diphenyltetrazolium bromide salt) assay. It consists in a colorimetric test to determine mitochondrial succinic dehydrogenase activity that is able to reduce the soluble dye MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazyl-2-yl) 2,5 diphenyltetrazolium bromide salt) to a blue insoluble formazan product. The reaction is measured spectrophotometrically at 570 nm.
MTT assay allows the quantification of the mitochrondrial metabolism and respiratory chain activity of cells in response to pharmaceutical, chemical and environmental compounds, and nutrients.
